Residential Large Lighting

Uttz Residence

AOLP 2018 Award of Excellence
C

The Uttz Residence showcases a comprehensive approach to large-scale residential lighting, where architecture, landscape, and property boundaries are thoughtfully unified into a cohesive nighttime environment.

A National Win in a Highly Competitive Category

Designed by Jason Sponzilli, the lighting strategy extends beyond the home itself to define the entire estate, creating depth, structure, and visual continuity from the street to the rear landscape. By layering illumination across vertical and horizontal planes, the design enhances both the home’s architectural character and the surrounding natural elements. The result is a refined, immersive nighttime experience that balances elegance, visibility, and spatial definition across the property.

Architectural Illumination

The home’s façade is carefully illuminated to emphasize its symmetry, material contrast, and architectural detailing. Uplighting highlights the stonework, dormers, and central gables, while softer washes define transitions between siding and masonry. Special attention is given to the garage elevation and entry sequence, where lighting subtly frames the American flag and reinforces the home’s welcoming focal points. The lighting design enhances scale without overpowering the structure, maintaining a warm and balanced presence.

Key features include:

  • Uplighting on stone façade and architectural massing
  • Accent lighting on dormers, gables, and window groupings
  • Garage and entry illumination that reinforces symmetry and focal points

Landscape and Foreground Integration

Foreground lighting plays a critical role in connecting the home to its surrounding environment. Ornamental trees near the entry are illuminated to create layered depth and soften the transition between architecture and landscape. Low-level lighting within planting beds and along the driveway adds subtle guidance while enhancing texture and dimension. This integration ensures the approach to the home feels intentional, inviting, and visually dynamic from multiple vantage points.

Highlights include:

  • Tree lighting to create vertical foreground interest
  • Soft planting bed illumination for texture and layering
  • Drive and entry lighting for safe, welcoming navigation

Perimeter and Property Depth

A defining feature of the project is the extension of lighting beyond the immediate structure into the broader landscape. Rows of Leyland cypress trees are illuminated to establish privacy while also creating a dramatic vertical backdrop. In other areas, layered lighting across mixed plantings and natural stone retaining walls adds depth and visual rhythm. This approach expands the perceived size of the property at night and reinforces a sense of enclosure without feeling confined.

Key elements include:

  • Linear lighting along privacy hedges for boundary definition
  • Layered illumination across varied plant species
  • Accent lighting on stone retaining walls and grade transitions

Evening Presence and Cohesion

The overall lighting composition is designed to be experienced as a unified environment rather than a series of individual elements. By balancing brightness levels and carefully controlling fixture placement, the design avoids hotspots while maintaining clear visual hierarchy. The home remains the focal point, supported by a layered landscape that adds depth and context. The result is a sophisticated nighttime identity that enhances both curb appeal and the overall experience of the property.

Design strategies include:

  • Layered lighting from foreground to perimeter
  • Controlled intensity to maintain visual balance
  • Warm tonal consistency across architecture and landscape
