GLOW

AOLP 2021 Award of Excellence
C

The GLOW project demonstrates the artistic possibilities of large-scale decorative lighting installations.

A National Win in a Highly Competitive Category

Designed by Anthony Bogdanovich of California Outdoor Lighting, the installation transforms the landscape into a vibrant nighttime environment filled with color, atmosphere, and visual energy. Rather than simply illuminating the landscape, the design uses light as a creative medium to reshape how visitors experience the space after dark. Trees, pathways, and garden features become illuminated sculptures that guide guests through the property. The result is an immersive nighttime environment that blends creativity, technology, and landscape design.

Creative Color Design

Color lighting plays a central role in defining the character of the GLOW installation. Carefully selected color palettes were used to highlight trees, foliage, and architectural features while creating dramatic contrasts throughout the landscape. By layering different hues across the environment, the lighting design produces depth and movement that continuously changes as viewers move through the space. The effect transforms familiar landscape elements into striking nighttime compositions.

Key features include:

  • Color-changing LED fixtures placed throughout the landscape

  • Dramatic illumination of tree canopies and foliage

  • Contrasting light tones to create depth and visual movement

Immersive Landscape Experience

A major goal of the lighting design was to create an immersive environment where visitors could experience the landscape in a completely new way. Lighting compositions were arranged to guide movement through the property while revealing new visual focal points throughout the space. This approach encourages exploration and interaction with the landscape while maintaining a cohesive visual theme across the installation.

Highlights include:

  • Large-scale lighting compositions across garden areas

  • Strategic placement of fixtures to guide movement

  • Lighting transitions that reveal new focal points throughout the property

Nighttime Transformation

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the project is the dramatic transformation of the landscape after sunset. Trees, pathways, and garden features become sculptural forms through the careful use of color and shadow. By layering illumination across different elements of the landscape, the design creates a rich visual environment that feels both dynamic and cohesive.

Design strategies include:

  • Layered lighting across foreground and background elements

  • Color lighting used to emphasize natural forms and textures

  • Balanced compositions that maintain harmony across the landscape
