Feature-Focused Lighting

Twin Falls

AOLP 2019 Award of Excellence
C

The Twin Falls lighting project focuses on creating a tranquil nighttime environment that highlights the natural beauty of water, trees, and surrounding landscape elements.

A National Win in a Highly Competitive Category

Designed by Tim Ryan, the lighting system enhances the reflective qualities of the pool while revealing the intricate forms of the surrounding tree canopy. Rather than overwhelming the space with bright illumination, the design relies on subtle layers of light that emphasize texture, depth, and natural forms. The result is a serene outdoor environment where light enhances the experience of the landscape after dark.

Water and Reflection

Water plays a central role in the visual experience of the landscape, and the lighting design carefully enhances the reflective qualities of the pool surface. Subtle underwater illumination allows the water to glow softly while reflecting the surrounding trees and architectural elements. This interplay between light and reflection creates a dynamic visual effect that evolves throughout the evening. The design ensures that the water remains a focal point without overpowering the surrounding landscape.

Key features include:

  • Subtle underwater lighting

  • Reflected light across the pool surface

  • Soft illumination around water edges

Tree Illumination

The surrounding trees form a dramatic canopy that frames the outdoor living space and adds vertical dimension to the landscape. Carefully positioned uplights reveal the branching structures and textures of the trees while maintaining a natural nighttime appearance. This approach highlights the scale of the landscape while adding depth and visual interest. The lighting enhances the natural beauty of the trees without creating harsh or artificial effects.

Highlights include:

  • Uplighting to reveal branch structure

  • Shadowing to create visual depth

  • Selective lighting for natural effect

Landscape Atmosphere

Beyond highlighting individual features, the lighting design was intended to create a peaceful and immersive atmosphere throughout the entire outdoor space. Soft lighting levels encourage relaxation while guiding movement through the landscape. The layered illumination ensures that each area of the property contributes to the overall visual composition. The result is a balanced nighttime environment that feels both elegant and inviting.

Design elements include:

  • Low-level landscape lighting

  • Warm illumination tones

  • Balanced light distribution
