Feature-Focused Lighting

Spyglass Falls

AOLP 2019 Award of Excellence
C

Spyglass Falls is a feature-focused lighting project centered on transforming a multi-tiered water feature into a dynamic nighttime experience.

A National Win in a Highly Competitive Category

Designed to highlight the movement, texture, and scale of cascading water, the lighting brings the falls to life after dark. Through precise fixture placement and layered illumination, the design captures both the power and tranquility of the landscape, creating a visually immersive focal point within the surrounding environment.

Water Feature Illumination

The primary focus of the design is the cascading waterfall system, where multiple tiers of stone and flowing water are illuminated to emphasize motion and depth. Subtle variations in light intensity and angle reveal the unique character of each drop, from gentle trickles to more dramatic falls.

Key elements include:

  • Underwater and concealed uplighting to illuminate flowing water from within
  • Targeted beam control to highlight individual cascades without flattening the scene
  • Layered intensity to create depth across multiple waterfall tiers

Movement and Visual Drama

Lighting is used to enhance the natural movement of water, creating a constantly shifting visual experience. As water flows over rock edges and into pools below, the illumination captures reflections, shimmer, and motion, adding a cinematic quality to the feature.

Design strategies include:

  • Grazing light across water surfaces to emphasize texture and flow
  • Highlighting splash zones and transitions between tiers
  • Using contrast to separate foreground, midground, and background elements

Integration with Landscape

While the waterfall is the focal point, surrounding plantings and stonework are selectively illuminated to frame the feature without competing for attention. Trees and shrubs are softly lit to provide context and depth, allowing the water feature to remain the visual centerpiece.

Key features include:

  • Subtle uplighting of trees and plant material for spatial definition
  • Controlled spill light to maintain focus on the falls
  • Balanced composition between illuminated and shadowed areas
